Description: In addition to taking Oil Pastel to the next level, students will also be introduced to three new mediums: pen and ink, watercolor pencil, and compressed charcoal. Lessons will rotate through these mediums, beginning with the seven basic strokes of pen and ink, and incorporating watercolor pencil into the pen and ink projects. In Oil Pastel, rather than learning one lesson at a time, Mixed Media students will do a series of paintings from start to finish, with a goal of completing at least 4 paintings by the end of the year. We will incorporate all lessons learned in previous classes, including drawing basics for a good initial sketch, composition, backgrounds, blending, light and shadow, and perspective. Examples include sandcastles against a sunset background, nighttime ocean scenes, complex still life using several objects and a full background, tropical underwater scenes, fall landscapes, etc. Paintings will be carefully planned and executed by the student. Lessons will cover a wide variety of technique in all four mediums, from extremely detailed to more abstract.

THIS CLASS IS DESIGNED WITH ALL NEW PROJECTS TO ACCOMMODATE ALL RETURNING CHAT ART STUDENTS, INCLUDING LAST YEAR’S MIXED MEDIA B CLASS.

Students will have the opportunity to showcase their work at the CHAT Christmas Celebration and the Spring Showcase. 

Tutor:  Sandy Adler attended Austin Community College to pursue an A.A. in Fine Arts, Minneapolis Technical College to pursue an A.A. in Graphic/Commercial Design, and Crown College for a B.A.  in Christian Education.  She is currently a practicing and accomplished artist in both fine arts and graphic design.  She is the Director of Marekting, Advertising and Promotion as well as Vice President of Heart of the City Ministries, a non-profit organization led by Sandy and her husband for the purpose of bringing racial and denominational unity to the Body of Christ in the Twin Cities area.  Her paintings in oil pastel have been featured in businesses in the Osseo area.  She has been teaching art for the past 15 years in area co-ops as well as after school enrichment programs in the local school districts, with over 160 students during the 2012-13 school year.  In 2006 Sandy won a grant through the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council to bring her pastels class into a select group of inner-city schools, in order to provide supplies and instruction to students living at or below poverty level.  An 11-year home school veteran herself, Sandy’s passion is to make art instruction engaging and inspiring for students of all levels, and to help them truly learn to “see” the beauty of God’s world around them as they learn art basics and secrets that hone their own skills and abilities as young artists.

Level: Grades 8-12
Prerequisite: All students who have taken Beginning Oil Pastels and preferably Basic Drawing, as well as students who have taken Mixed Media B, either through CHAT or another academy may take this class. However, speak with instructor to obtain special permission if you feel your student has had comparable art classes from other sources in the past.
Homework: Students will need to attend all classes if possible, complete all assigned projects, and prepare at least two pieces for final mounting and display at each CHAT Showcase. May require some work outside of class time.

Supplies:  Mounting materials are included in the price of the class (above).  The supplies listed below may either be purchased by students on their own, or ordered  through the tutor. (The tutor is able to purchase supplies online for a radically reduced price at bulk rates, and it is also beneficial for students to be working with the same quality of materials).

Everything listed below can be purchased through instructor in a bulk order to save costs, and any supplies from previous semesters or from home can be used as long as they match the quality & description as closely as possible.  . Mrs. Adler will email a detailed supplies list to order from before classes begin, AND REIMBURSEMENT FOR SUPPLIES IS PAID DIRECTLY TO TUTOR SEPARATE FROM TUITION.
